Toxic products transported through city
HOLGUÍN, Cuba - february 2 (Juan

- Residents of the Sagua de Tánamo
municipality in Holguín province
complain that toxic products destined for
mining operations in nearby Nicaro are being
trucked through the city, without any apparent
measures being taken to safeguard from a
spill.
Residents, who call the truck "the
stink cart" for the odor it leaves
behind, say last January a 9-year-old boy
and his mother suffered burns when they
came too close to the truck right on Maceo
Street, in the center of the city. The fumes,
they say, also leave passersby with tearing
eyes.
The truck carries ammonium hydrosulfide
to the nickel mines in Nicaro from the port
of Moa, and carries other toxic substances
on its way back, say residents.
Protests by the city's residents have prompted
authorities to schedule the runs in the
early hours of the morning to minimize the
population's exposure to the fumes, but
residents say this is still not sufficient,
noting that the truck travels through a
road that's in very poor condition and that
it's not even accompanied by a patrol or
safety escort.
