Youth wanted to throw stones at police chief; broke glass instead

CAMAGUEY, Cuba - April 19 (Marilyn Díaz Fernández, Lux Info Press / www.cubanet.org) - A young man who was arrested after breaking the windows of a government dollar store in Sibanicú said he had been carrying the stones to throw at a sector chief of police and only broke the glass when he couldn't find the officer.

Ignacio Caselles Pérez, 18, who people in town generally agree has psychological problems, stoned the windows of the "El Pueblo" dollar store during the night of April 11 and was arrested the same day after having been identified by an eye-witness.

After he was arrested, he told police he had been carrying the stones to throw at a sector chief of police known in town as Pompa, and that he only decided to stone the store windows when he couldn't find him.

Caselles was sentenced to three months in prison for causing damage to property on April 13.
