Prison filthy and overcrowded, says political prisoner

HOLGUIN, Cuba - August 8 (Liannis Meriño Aguilera, Jóvenes sin Censura / www.cubanet.org) - Political prisoner Juan Luis Rodríguez denounced poor conditions at the Cuba Sí prison, on the outskirts of Holguín, where he has been confined since July 23.

Rodríguez, 35, said the ward to which new inmates are assigned is so overcrowded that a number of them end up sleeping on the bare floor and being exposed to dirt and humidity since they get no bedding.

Rodríguez also said the reduced space, the suffocating heat and the lack of bathing facilities contribute to the pervading stench. Water, he said, is only turned on once a day, and for a few minutes.

Rodríguez was sentenced to two years after being charged with "social dangerousness."
