Detained man acquired dengue in jail

HAVANA, Cuba - August 1 (Richard Roselló / www.cubanet.org) - Tomás Fuente, a physician who has been in jail more than 16 days pending trial, said he was contaminated with dengue fever in the Guanajay police jail.

Fuente, who was arrested July 16, is accused of disobeying authorities and of using offensive language directed against Cuban president Fidel Castro. He was arrested after he interfered in what he called an abuse of authority by two out-of-uniform police officers upon a young man. The incident took place in a truck in which they were all traveling to Guanajay, a town not too far from Havana.

Fuente said the police unit in which he is being held was sprayed, but not so the holding cells. Fuente has headaches and a high fever and has been vomiting since July 29. The physician who examined him at the Guanajay policlinic recommended he be admitted to the hospital.
