Youths mobilized in Havana after news of Castro's illness

HAVANA, Cuba – August 1 (Juan Carlos Linares Balmaseda / www.cubanet.org) – Starting at dawn August 1, Havana's equivalent of U.S. draft boards, known locally as military committees, started mobilizing young men registered to them following the news the previous evening of Cuban President Fidel Castro's transferring power to his brother to undergo surgery.

The military committees keep a registry of all Cuban men who have finished their military service until age 45, after which they are enrolled in the reserves. Registration is obligatory; any change of address or employment must be endorsed by an official of the appropriate military committee.
