Evicted man sets himself on fire

CIENFUEGOS, Cuba - September 8 (Luis Miguel González Leiva, Cubanacán Press / www.cubanet.org) - Armando Chacón had warned police that if they evicted his family from the house they had occupied a month ago, he would set himself on fire.

On August 30, at noon, he fulfilled his promise when police stormed the house to evict the family and pulled Chacón out, in flames.

About 300 bystanders near-rioted, forcing police to withdraw to their patrol cars.

Chacón acknowledged days before the incident that he had occupied the house in the Tulipán subdivision of Cienfuegos illegally. He explained he had exhausted all avenues of securing housing for his wife, two children and himself.

Chacón is in serious condition in the burn unit of the Gustavo Aldereguía hospital, in Cienfuegos.
