Independent farmer fears someone killed his 12 pigs

SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba, October 17 (Rosa María Montoya, APLO - www.cubanet.org) - Antonio Alonso, president of the National Alliance of Independent farmers of Cuba, says he fears someone killed all of his fattened pigs to discourage his dissidient activities.

Alonso said that when he went out in the morning to feed his 12 hogs he found all were dead with no symptoms of disease.

"The sudden death of 12 hogs, which weighed over 60 pounds each, makes me suspect that there's something behind this," he said.

Alonso was detained by Cuba's political police on October 1 and questioned about the deaths. He said the officer in charge, whom he identified as a Colonel Alemán, told him, "Not just the pigs are going to die."

The carcasses were buried to prevent the spread of any disease, although Alonso said there was no nearby laboratory which could have run tests.

Another official identified as Diorqui said the government wasn't going to permit any more cooperative ventures.
