Tumult at prevention of AIDS rally

SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba, October 6 (Guillermo Espinosa Rodríguez, APLO / www.cubanet.org) - Outnumbered police beat a retreat from an AIDS prevention rally after failing to remove a participant among the estimated 20,000 students in the Plaza de la Revolución Antonio Maceo.

When companions of the youth reacted to the way he was being treated by police, they removed him themselves while others turned on the police.

Unable to control the crowd, the police moved to another area of the plaza and the event resumed.

The participants were students from the city's schools and colleges, including the Universidad de Oriente. The two-hour event included entertainment by two musical groups, Charanga Habanera and Grupo Erica.
