Police break up dissident meeting before
it begins
PALMA SORIANO, Cuba, October 7 (Virgilio
Delat La O, APLO / www.cubanet.org) - Police
agents and members of the Rapid Response
Brigade stopped a car carrying five dissidents
to a post-midnight meeting called by the
Cuban Orthodox Renovation Party and took
everyone to the police station.
"The car in which we were traveling
was intercepted by police agents at the
entrance of the town of Jutinicú,
some 10 kilometers from Alto Songo",
said Waldinar Parra. "Pistols in hand,
the agents forced us from the car and violently
spread Roberto González Ferria against
the vehicle, twisting his arms and using
karate tactics. They split the head of Omar
Casero Zulueta, probable with the butt of
a pistol."
Parra said the officers confiscated documents
and other papers as well as a camera. A
poster with the party's logo - PCRO - was
ripped up.
The five were taken to the police station
after the incident, which occurred September
30. They were charged with public disorder,
fined 30 pesos and released two days later.
The day after the detentions, the military
arrested the would-be host, Antonio Alonso,
president of the National Alliance of Independent
Farmers of Cuba, and occupied his farm.
