Wave of arrests following deaths of tourists

HAVANA, November 8 (Ernesto Roque Cintero, UPECI / www.cubanet.org) - Police have been carrying out a series of arrests in central and Old Havana following the killings of several foreign tourists.

To date, there is no official word on the deaths, so the nationalities of the victims and the circumstances of their deaths are unknown.

Dissident human rights organizations talk of two or three deaths.

The roundup of suspects is being carried out by joint teams from the National Revolutionary Police, the Department of Technical Investigations and the Interior Ministry's special tactical group. Coordination is said to be under the Interior Ministry.

The target of the roundups are mainly young people who frequent parks and other popular places. Some of those picked up have been sent back to their provinces of origin.
