Independent librarian fined for alleged insult

HAVANA, November 9 (Ernesto Roque Cintero, UPECI / www.cubanet.org) - The director of the independent library in Herradura, Pinar del Río province, Lázaro González, says he was fined for refusing to allow his luggage to be searched.

González's car was pulled over on the National Highway November 1 and he was ordered by police agents to open his suitcase. When he refused, he said he was charged and fined with insulting government officials.

"The agents searched my luggage against my will and imposed an arbitrary fine," he said. "Such searches are illegal."

"All I had in the suitcase were dirty clothes and medicine," he said.
