Varela Project activist and brother of Cubs shortstop arrested

HAVANA, October 31 (Adrián Leiva / www.cubanet.org) - Daniel Ordóñez Pereira, activist of the Varela Project and brother of Chicago Cubs shortstop Reynoldo Ordóñez, was arrested last week.

Ordóñez Pereira said no explanation was given for his arrest, which took place in his home October 24. He was taken away in a police cruiser for questioning at a regional police station and released later in the day.

For Ordóñez Pereira, a member of the Christian Liberation Movement, this was the latest in a series of harassments. Last year he was denied access to a domino club where he used to play. He attributed this to his brother's defection to the United States from Cuba's national team.

Another brother, Juan Carlos, was stabbed the day after Christmas during an altercation.
