Ladies in White say they are not an organized
group
HAVANA, November 2 (www.cubanet.org) -
The dissident Ladies in White, who will
share this year's Sakharov Prize for freedom
of thought, say they do not constitute an
organized group.
They issued a statement saying: "The
Ladies in White are not a party, group or
political organization or of any other type.
We are a grouping of wives of the 75 prisoners
of conscience imprisoned in March of 2003
during the Black Spring, as well as mothers,
daughters and aunts."
The Ladies in White were among three winners
named for the Sakharov Prize in recognition
of their efforts to obtain the release of
their loved ones, sentenced to terms of
up to 28 years in a government crackdown
on dissidents.
The prize, awarded annually by the European
Parliament since 1988, also went this year
to Nigerian lawyer Hauwa Ibrahim and the
France-based Reporters Without Borders,
because the Parliament found itself unable
to decide between the three.
Those signing the statement were Laura
Pollán, wife of Héctor Maseda;
Miriam Leiva, wife of Oscar Espinosa Chepe;
Berta Soler, wife of Ángel Moya;
Loyda Valdés, wife of Alfredo Felipe
Fuente; and Julia Núñez, wife
Adolfo Fernández Saínz
The statement noted that the Ladies now
have a representative in Miami, Yolanda
Huerga, and in Madrid, Blanca Reyes. Huerga
is the wife of Manuel Vázquez Portal,
and Reyes is the wife of Raúl Rivero,
independent journalists who went into exile
after being freed from prison this year.
