Independent journalist accused of harassing Venezuelans

HAVANA, June 27 (Amarilis C. Rey, Cuba Verdad / www.cubanet.org) - State security agents have told independent journalist José Antonio Fornaris that he has been "hostile" towards Venezuelans and runs the risk of being arrested and jailed.

Two security went to Fornaris's home last week to say that a bus carrying sick Venezuelans had been stoned, implying Fornaris was behind the incident. He denied it.

Fornaris said the government has been trying to link independent journalists with acts of violence in order to discredit them.

This was Fornaris' second run-in with authorities. He was summoned by police January 26 and told that he faced imprisonment if he continued as an independent journalist.

"Do they want me to stop covering Venezuelans?" he asked.

Because of the close relations between Fidel Castro and Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez, there are many Venezuelans in Cuba, many as students or taking advantage of Cuban medical facilities.
