Infant's death attributed to medical negligence, fight ensues

RANCHUELO, Cuba - July 21 (Félix Reyes Gutiérrez, Cubanacán Press / www.cubanet.org) - After Yannara Pérez' baby asphyxiated during the delivery, her husband and mother blamed medical personnel and attacked them, causing police to intervene.

Pérez, 20, was referred to the maternity hospital in the provincial capital, Santa Clara, by doctor Juan Álvarez, who initially saw her in the nearby town of Ranchuelo. Álvarez recommended Pérez go to the capital to deliver because of the position of the baby, loss of placental fluid, and heart irregularities he detected.

Medical personnel at the Mariana Grajales hospital in Santa Clara, however, determined Pérez could give birth naturally. The baby was stillborn later on the night of July 15.
