Dissident accused of trying to illegally leave Cuba

SANTA CLARA, Cuba - July 13 (Karel Castillo, Cubanacán Press / www.cubanet.org) - Opposition pacifist Yuniel Gancedo Machado was held by police last week for allegedly planning to illegally leave the country.

Gancedo Machado was stopped by police when he and his girlfriend, Geisy Rubí Pérez, were heading for an evening of entertainment.

According to Gancedo Machado, 25, he was questioned by police who tried to link him to a supposed plan the police had discovered involving an illegal embarkation from the north coast in Villa Clara province. He said he the agents tried in vain to get him to sign a confession that was organizing the trip.

He was held overnight and released.

Gancedo Machado belongs to the Maceist Movement for Dignity.
