Reprisals against jailed dissidents feared

PLACETAS, Cuba - July 11 (María Elena Alpízar Ariosa, Grupo Decoro / www.cubanet.org) - The launching of a book by dissident Huber Matos has caused Bertha Antúnez Pernet, president of the National Civic Resistance Movement, to fear for the safety of imprisoned relatives.

She said she feared reprisals against Jorge Luis García Pérez and Omar Pernet Hernández because of an exchange on Dominican radio between Matos and the head of the Cuban diplomatic mission in Santo Domingo.

Matos' book, "Boitel Vive," recounts human rights violations in Cuban prisons. Such violations have been denounced by García Pérez, who has spent more than 15 years imprisoned and is the brother of Antúnez Pernet.
