Independent journalist suffers broken ankle and bruises in attack

PINAR DEL RIO, Cuba - July 11 (Roberto Estrella, Abdala Press / www.cubanet.org) - Independent journalist Rafael Ferro Salas, director of Abdala Press, says he was called a "traitor" and hit with stones last week during a power blackout.

Ferro Salas identified the stone thrower as Inti Marrero, 38, the son of a retired officer of the Revolutionary Armed Services. The incident occurred outside a café near where Ferro Salas lives.

"He said I was a traitor and a mercenary," said Ferro Salas. "If this wasn't enough, when I left the place he started to throw rocks at me. Everbody there protested but he didn'tpay them any attention."

Ferro Salas suffered a broken ankle and bruises to his chest, arms and legs.
