Food prices increase
PLACETAS, Cuba, January 20 (María

- Food prices in Placetas, central Cuba,
have increased after the government barred
the U. S. dollar from circulation and imposed
a 10% surcharge on dollar transactions,
said local dissident Amado Ruiz.
Chicken legs, for instance, are selling
at 23 pesos a pound whereas they used to
be 21.50 just recently, said Ruiz.
"The worst part of this is that salaries
remain the same, since the government has
not raised them in years," said Ruiz.
He said that private (and illegal) vendors
undersell the government distribution network,
pointing out that sausages sold in State
stores at 5 pesos can be had for 3 from
independents, and pork liver, at 14 pesos
a pound in the stores, can be found for
10 from the private entrepreneurs.
