Cuban polyclinics show improvement in 2004
HAVANA, Cuba, January 12 (Adrián
Leiva, Grupo Decoro / www.cubanet.org) -
The more than 90 neighborhood polyclinics
serving the 2.3 million residents of the
capital showed a marked improvement in terms
of equipment and physical plant during 2004.
The deteriorating condition of most of
these institutions had been generating complaints
from the residents, who often turned to
hospitals for medical services, overcrowding
them.
The present improvement is the result of
more than 18 months of directed maintenance
and the inauguration of new service areas
in existing facilities, meant to alleviate
the load on hospitals.
The Cuban health system is under stress
due to a scarcity of medicines and supplies
and to the reduction in the number of available
doctors, after thousands were sent to Venezuela
and other countries.
The hospitals are said to be next in line
for capital improvements.
