Salt-water intrusion threatens local fish in Cuba

CAMAGÜEY, Cuba, January 17 (Carlos Hechemendia, CPIC / www.cubanet.org) - Salt-water intrusion into the La Redonda and La Leche marshes, in the municipality of Morón, Ciego de Ávila province, threaten the survival of local fish species, say local fishermen.

"Ecology is only cared for in Cuban TV," said one fisherman, "because government journalists are either duped or pretend they don't see."

Fishermen say they are trying to eliminate catfish, a species that was introduced in a plan that later didn't pan out, but they say it is difficult, as the species breeds easily, and crowds out more valuable species.

An expert said the International Trout Fishery preserve in the La Redonda marshes is almost beyond recovery as a result of salt-water intrusion and the colonization by catfish.
