Laid off Cuban sugar workers called back

PLACETAS, Cuba, January 13 (María Elena Alpízar, Grupo Decoro / www.cubanet.org) - Close to 70 workers who were laid off when the Sugar Ministry shut down three area sugar mills more than a year ago have been called back to work effective January 20.

The workers, some of the hundreds who lost their jobs when the Benito Juárez, Carbó Serviá, and Hermanos Ameijeiras mills closed down in Placetas, had been kept on the payroll while they participated in an education program created by the Ministry.

Due to lack of qualified personnel, the workers have been told to report to work at the Chiquitico Fabregat and José María Pérez mills, in nearby Remedios and Camajuaní municipalities, or lose their salary.
