FROM CUBA
Peasants forced to sell their cattle

HAVANA, Cuba, February 22 (Reinaldo Cosano Alén, Lux Info Press / www.cubanet.org) - Santiago Rodríguez, of Banes municipality in Holguín province, said the government is trying to force him to sell his few head of cattle because he doesn't own land in which to keep them.

Rodríguez said the local head of Tax Office inspectors, Grisel Díaz, threatened to fine him 500 pesos and to confiscate his six cows with their calves unless he sold them to the government.

The problem, Rodríguez explained, is that he doesn't own land and his cows graze public lands. But, said Martha Diaz, a local human rights activist, grazing one's cows in public commons is a Cuban tradition that goes back to colonial times.

Díaz said there are other peasants in the municipality who face similar sell orders for the same reason.
