Government announces urgent measures in the face of drought

HAVANA, Cuba, February 21 (Reinaldo Cosano Alén, Lux Info Press / www.cubanet.org) - The provincial governments of Havana (province) and Havana (city) have announced special measures to be implemented in the face of a drought that meteorologists have called the worst in the last 44 years.

An official at the Hydraulic Resources office for the city of Havana, Jorge Calá, said the low levels of stored water demanded that drastic steps be taken to conserve water in agriculture and other large consumers, such as industry, schools and hospitals, and among the city's two million population.

The president of the provincial assembly of the Popular Power, Juan Contino, warned the population to be prepared for strict conservation measures that will be implemented.

There is little indication that precipitation will provide any relief in the coming months.
