Malaysian and Cuban news agencies to
exchange news Bernama,
Malaysia, February 22, 2005. KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 22 (Bernama) -- The
news agencies of Malaysia and Cuba signed a news exchange agreement Tuesday which
the Cuban Ambassador to Malaysia hailed as a concrete step towards increasing
awareness about Cuba in this region and about Malaysia in Latin American countries. Pedro
Monzon Barata said the exchange of news and information between the two countries
through Bernama and Cuba's Prensa Latina, would create the multiplying effect
of making both countries better known in the two regions. "This is
also concrete step in enhancing relations between Cuba and Malaysia as Bernama
is a dynamic and energetic news agency in this region," he said after signing
the agreement with Bernama General Manager Datuk Syed Jamil Syed Jaafar at Wisma
Bernama. Barata said it was also timely as Cuba would assume a higher international
profile when it takes over the chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM)
from Malaysia at the NAM summit to be held in Havana next year. Prensa Latina
is Bernama's 23rd news exchange partner. Under the agreement, news agencies of
both countries will file major news stories about each other for redistribution
by the respective agencies. Barata also said Cuba and Malaysia were currently
working on collaborative programmes especially in the field of bio-technology,
medical research and sports. "We have the expertise in bio-technology,
pharmaceutical products and sports while you have the political will and financial
means to develop them," he said. Copyright
