Campaign sends students out to gather recyclable materials

SANTA CLARA, Cuba, February 18 (Javier Machado, Cubanacán Press / www.cubanet.org) - Middle school students attending the Juan Oscar Alvarado school in Santa Clara were sent out for several days to forage for recyclable materials of every description, disrupting class schedules and activities.

The students were formed into groups and were told they were competing for a chance at a real camping trip.

The students went around fast-food, retail, and service establishments, such as Servi Cupets and the hard currency stores rummaging through the garbage bins for cans, cardboard, plastic bottles, and even clothes hangers.

When it was all over February 17, students and teachers combed through the take, selecting materials that could prove useful at school or at home, before forwarding the haul to the government agency.
