HAVANA, Cuba, February 14 (Ariel Delgado,
UPECI / www.cubanet.org) - A fire gutted
most of the two-story building at 814 Campanario
in central Havana in the afternoon February
13. Preliminary reports said the fire originated
with an electrical fault. The building's
wiring had been known to be in poor repair.
The owner, aided by some neighbors, managed
to get some of his furniture and belongings.
Police and firemen controlled the fire
in time to prevent its spread to adjoining
structures.
"I really don't know what's going
to happen now," said one resident.
"I lost my bed, mattress and wardrobe."
The government provides some help for people
in this situation, but often replacements
for the goods lost are simply not available
for extended periods of time.
Accidents of this nature are happening
more and more often due to the deteriorating
state of the housing stock, most in dire
need of repair and maintenance for lack
of materials.
