PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia is allowing Cuba to
conduct clinical trials on vaccines as part
of efforts to promote co-operation in the
pharmaceutical industry.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib
Tun Razak, who met visiting Cuban First
Vice-President Raul Castro here yesterday,
hoped the co-operation would boost bilateral
trade, which came to only RM7mil last year.
"The deal will include procurement,
manufacturing and research and development
in vaccines and pharmaceutical products.
"Cuba feels that our country is unique
for conducting clinical trials because we
abide by global standards and because of
the composition of our society," he
told reporters after the meeting.
Najib said Cuba also agreed to provide
coaches to train Malaysian athletes.
Castro, who arrived here on Saturday for
a four-day visit, also called on Prime Minister
Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
On the signing of the agreement between
Malaysia and Singapore to bring an end to
the dispute over Singapore's land reclamation
in the Straits of Johor, Najib said it was
a positive sign.
"It had not been easy. We worked very
hard. I think that's the way to go."
Later in Bandar Sungai Emas, Banting, Najib
launched the institutions of higher learning
expo at Kompleks AIM.
He said students must choose relevant courses
in institutions of higher learning and work
at enhancing their personality to make it
in a world that demands more than just a
scroll as a symbol of learning.
The expo is the first of many roadshows
to be held in suburban and rural areas to
enable students to have a better idea about
the choices at institutions of higher learning.
