Suspicious visitor claims to come from U. S.-based NED

SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba, April 15 (Roberto García Cabreja, APLO / www.cubanet.org) - A few dissidents and independent journalists in Santiago de Cuba received a visit from a man who said he represented the National Endowment for Democracy, a U. S. organization that supports democratic development throughout the world.

The man, bearing a Cuban passport and documentation identifying him as affiliated with the NED, showed up April 9 at the homes of dissident Alfredo Viñol and his wife, and also visited me and another independent journalist, Rosa María Montoya.

The Cuban passport identified the man as one Robert García, coming from Philadelphia.

Most of his questions had to do with money supposedly paid by the NED to Cuban dissidents. The man said he had come to verify that the funds had been received.
