Cuban-Americans debate
hurricane aid

Miami, FL, Sep. 13 (UPI) -- Cubans in Miami
are organizing relief for the weather-whipped
island while debating whether relief supplies
will actually reach those in need.
As Hurricane Ivan bore down on the island
Cuban-Americans organizing a relief drive
said they believe supplies they are collecting
will reach the Cuban people who need them,
the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported
Monday.
But hard liners say Cuban President Fidel
Castro's regime will divert them to its
own uses.
Members of the Christian Women's Association
in Defense of the Cuban Family, along with
Jewish Solidarity, hope to send 240 boxes
of supplies to the surviving victims of
Hurricane Charley this week. They plan to
collect more after Ivan hits.
"Many people here in Miami are anxious,"
said Eddie Levy of Jewish Solidarity. "Their
families were affected by Charley."
Charley hit the island Aug. 12, and Ivan
was approaching the western tip of Cuba
Monday.
Cuban exile activist Emilio Izquierdo said
he doubted the aid would help.
"Fidel Castro is the worst hurricane
Cuba has had for the last 45 years -- except
he will not move," he said.
