Havana building collapse damages surrounding houses

HAVANA, Cuba, November 15 (Juan Carlos Linares / www.cubanet.org) - The collapse of a building in the Luyanó district of Havana November 13 damaged about a dozen houses, some severely, in its immediate vicinity, and killed two puppies.

The 80-year-old building had been condemned in 1976 and had been awaiting demolition until crews started the work two months ago. According to neighbors, the work crews from the Construction Ministry took their time with the demolition, and residents made periodic forays into the work site to extract any manner of scarce building materials which they felt they could use in their own homes. Thus they carried off bricks, rebar, windows, all the while taking risks at the building site.

As it turned out, no one was hurt in the collapse. Some of the surrounding houses lost their roof, walls; some were partially demolished themselves.
