Cuban dissident brothers fined, demoted

HAVANA, Cuba, November 3 (José Antonio Fornaris, Cuba Verdad / www.cubanet.org) - Cuban authorities have demoted two brothers to lesser jobs at the factory where they work and fined them 1,500 pesos each, accusing them of plotting to leave the country illegally.

Manuel and Luis Pérez worked as brigade heads at the gasket factory in El Cotorro, outside of Havana. They are now assigned to lesser positions at a lower salary.

Luis denies harboring intentions of leaving the country illegally. His home was searched October 5. Manuel is a member of the dissident organization Partido Democrático 30 de Noviembre and says authorities have taken reprisals against him before.

Authorities held the brothers for three days and fined them 1,500 pesos, the equivalent of the average salary for six months' work.

A cousin, Camilo Pérez, said both brothers are constantly hounded by State Security, Communist Party, and workplace officials.
