Police spread out in "illegal resident" cleanup

HAVANA, Cuba, November 1 (Juan Carlos Linares / www.cubanet.org) - National Police have been carrying out a dragnet for illegal residents of Havana and returning those caught to their home provinces.

Illegal residents are people from any province who don't have official permits to live in Havana.

Police have been requesting identification from passersby around the city. Those whose papers are found not to be in order have been taken to the nearest police station for further investigation. Eventually those found to be in Havana illegally are given one-way bus or train rides back to their original provinces.

Police have not divulged the number of illegals that have been sent back. These types of operations are carried out discretely, said an Interior Ministry agent.
