Cuban border guards frustrate escape attempt
HAVANA, Cuba, October (Roberto Santana
Rodríguez / www.cubanet.org) - Cuban
border guards frustrated an attempt by five
people to leave the island October 23, said
Lázaro Valdés, one of those
involved.
"We went in the water at about 8:30
p.m. and about four miles out, were intercepted
by the border guard launch. They told us
to return or they would sink our craft,"
said Valdés. "When we arrived
back at the beach, there were 12 policemen
waiting for us; they handcuffed us and took
us to the station, where we were questioned
by a State Security major until 4 a.m. At
that time they sent us home."
Valdés said police confiscated their
boat made of wood, foam and inner tubes,
as well as a compass, a pair of binoculars,
and some medicine.
Valdés said they were fined 10,000
pesos or 10,000 days in prison, but he said
he thinks that is only a threat meant to
intimidate them.
"Although, in this country, no one
knows anything. They took down our information
and told us to wait at home. The next day,
I went to work (as a school custodian) and
apparently, no one there knew anything,"
said Valdés.
