Shop windows smashed overnight in apparent protest in Cuba

HAVANA, Cuba, May 18 (María López, Lux Info Press / www.cubanet.org) - After the government announced Monday night that dollar stores in the island would curtail their sales, someone smashed the display windows of one such store in Guanabacoa's main drag and painted anti-government slogans on the walls.

Subsequently, police and Tech Investigations Department officers searched several homes, rounded up a number of people and took them to the nearby Alamar police station.

Among those arrested was Daniel Dubergel, a young anti-government activist. His mother said Daniel was at home sleeping when the windows were broken.

During the last few days, people have been lining up in front of the dollar stores, trying to buy all the soap, detergent, and toothpaste they can afford or that the stores will sell. The stores themselves have been under police custody since the government announcement Monday.
