Normando Hernández González brutally beaten in prison

(CAMAGUEY, Cuba, May 17 / Puenteinfocubamiami.org) - Several prison officials at Kilo 5 ½ brutally attacked, and then carried political prisoner and independent journalist Normando Hernández González by force in order to transfer him to a section that houses only common prisoners, declared his wife, Yarai Reyes.

In testimony given on May 15, 2004, in a telephone conversation with MAR for CUBA, Yarai Reyes stated that her husband Normando was transferred to Common Prisoners Area 2, Cubicle 8 of the prison Kilo 5 ½ in Pinar del Río.

"The prison director and three more officials carried Normando by force after he yelled Down with Fidel!, they brutally attacked him and then transferred him to a section with 106 common prisoners, in deplorable and inhumane conditions"- pointed out Yaria.

"Normando is in a hunger strike since last Friday, and two common prisoners joined him in the protest"- she further stated that at the end of the visit, members of the State Security advised her that a transfer and physical treatment depended on Normando's attitude.

On the other hand, family members were able to learn that common prisoners had been encouraged by prison authorities to attack Normando.

The 32 year old Cuban independent journalist Normando Hernández González was tried summarily and sentenced to 25 years, at the Provincial Popular Tribunal of Camaguey, on the wave of repression against the civil society on 2003. He was accused of crimes "against the independence and territorial integrity of the State".
