Rum fair to be held in Cuba
HAVANA, May 27 (Ariel Delgado Covarrubias
/ www.cubanet.org) - A fair to be called
the International Rum Festival will be held
June 6 to 9 in Havana, according to an announcement
by the government media recently.
Producers, distributors, wholesalers and
retailers from around the world are expected
to attend the event, which in addition to
its commercial aspects, it was announced,
will have a cultural component.
The event is sponsored by the Food Industry
Ministry working with Havana Club International,
Cuba Ron, S. A., the Association of Cuban
Bartenders, and with the participation of
the ministries of Culture, Sugar, External
Commerce, and Tourism, and the Cuban Conventions
Bureau.
Reaction among local aficionados of the
spirit was varied. One such, who only gave
his name as Ricardo, said: "I'll try
to get credentials to get in. That way I'll
drink some good rum, free." Another,
who said his name is Tony, was more sanguine:
"We'll see the foreigners drinking
with their Cuban girlfriends, and for us
there's only the cheap rum, when we can
get it."
