Drought in Cuba extends to hydroelectric
output
HAVANA, July 9 (Ariel Delgado Covarrubias
/ www.cubanet.org) - The continuing drought
affecting the easternmost Cuban provinces
has also had an effect on hydroelectric
facilities that supply power to outlying
or isolated communities.
In mountainous Santiago de Cuba province,
24 such generating facilities with a capacity
of 2.7 Megawatts a year have seen their
output drastically curtailed by the drought.
Some have been put out of commission entirely
and others work for only a few hours a day.
In Guamá municipality, where more
than 24% of the population depends on this
type of power generation, all 17 hydroelectric
plants have had their output reduced by
the drought. This has adversely impinged
upon the operations of medical dispensaries,
schools, social centers and others facilities
which are not connected to the national
power grid.
