FROM CUBA
Cafe or cafeteria, but no coffee to be had

HAVANA, June 30 (Reinaldo Cosano Alén / www.cubanet.org) - Cubans are as likely as not to shorten the name "cafeteria" to "cafe" in reference to said establishments. Residents of Palma Soriano say the Nuevo Mundo can be called by either name, but is neither.

"It's a cafeteria or cafe only in name," said Walter Leyte-Vidal. "They never have coffee, even though our province [Santiago de Cuba] is one of the main producers in the country. They don't even have water! If you go in asking for water, most likely they'll say there is none. In the rare case they do have it, there'll be another problem: they'll have no cups. Which, by the way, they sell for 2.50 pesos."

The Nuevo Mundo is centrally located in this city of 30,000 and used to be a fashionable spot to eat and meet people. Lately, said Leyte-Vidal, they very seldom have anything to offer customers.
