FROM CUBA
Imprisioned journalist Vázquez Portal hospitalized

HAVANA, January 16 (www.cubanet.org) - Ailing independent journalist and poet Manuel Vázquez Portal, serving an 18-year jail sentence for crimes against state security, has been transferred to the Ambrosio Grillo Hospital in Santiago de Cuba.

Yolanda Huerga Cedeño, wife of the 50-year-old prisoner, went to the hospital but was not allowed to see her husband.

"The guard told me I'd need authorization from State Security in order to see him," she said. "The guard called by telephone but my right was denied me."

Vázquez Portal, a heavy smoker, was hospitalized after an X-ray showed he had spots on his lungs.

His wife said he has a heavy cold and has been running a fever lately.
