Violence among youths on the rise in
Cuban province
CAMAGÜEY, January 13 (www.cubanet.org)
- At a recent meeting of the Provincial
Assembly of the Popular Power in Camagüey
province, officials aired a growing concern
over the increase in violence and criminality
among the young, as well as related developments
involving youths who are neither working
nor in school and who engage in prostitution.
In the last few days, the government-controlled
media in the province have initiated a campaign
directed against violence.
In the most recent case of youth violence,
16-year-old Claudia Rodríguez was
decapitated by a 17-year-old who cited a
"settlement of accounts" to explain
his action.
The year-end murder has shaken Camagüey
residents.
"The full Popular Power Assembly came
out in favor of increased community participation
to prevent juvenile delinquency and vandalism,"
said one delegate who requested anonymity.
"Notwithstanding, the problem is not
going to be solved until the economic situation
improves, because these youths kill for
a handful of money, or for food, because
they are hungry," the delegate said.
