Cuba
tightens controls on Internet use
HAVANA, 12 (AFP) - Havana is to limit
Internet access for Cubans whose telephone
bills are paid in local currency, in a bid
to stop password piracy, the state telephone
company announced.
Local people will still be able to use
the Internet, however, if they buy a telephone
card prepaid in dollars, the company ETECSA
said.
Communications Minister Ignacio Gonzalez
said Havana was trying to "regulate
Internet access by adopting measures that
help offer protection against the removal
of passwords ... intentional damage and
fraudulent, nonauthorized use of the services."
The new regulations will be introduced
from Saturday, January 24, as ETECSA prepares
to "limit access" to the server
"for calls from telephone numbers paid
for in the national currency".
Phone services paid in dollars will not
be affected, it said.
Cuba charges that since it only has limited
Internet access as a nation it can maintain
only low volumes of customers. Social organizations
should thus have priority to access the
Internet while paying in Cuban pesos, worth
23 to the US dollar.
