Road in poor state of repair hampers transportation

NUEVA GERONA, Cuba, February (Carlos Serpa Maceira, UPECI / www.cubanet.org) - Residents of La Demajagua, a town in the Isle of Youth, complain that the main thoroughfare in town has been unusable for the last 9 months, making access to the many homes along the road difficult and life in general inconvenient.

"Local officials say the potholes have not been repaired for lack of materials," said local resident Rosendo Mustelier.

About 500 meters of Ninth Street's 8-block length need repairs. Authorities actually started the work, but promptly stopped. The local bus drivers have refused to drive down the street.

"In the Isle of Youth, it is typical that streets not be repaired," said Mustelier. "There are roads in the capital, Nueva Gerona, as well as in other towns, with known problems that the government doesn't address."
