Havana residents protest restores water
service
HAVANA, Cuba, December (Roberto Santana
Rodríguez / www.cubanet.org) - Residents
of 29-C Street in the Buena Vista district
of Havana finally got fed up with lugging
water buckets, so on December 6 they marched
on the local offices of the Popular Council
and demanded that water service that had
been cut for repairs in late November be
restored.
Municipal authorities have been replacing
old metal pipes with plastic ones and, neighbors
felt, they were taking their sweet time
about it. Since service was cut, authorities
had been supplying residents with tanker
trucks, but some residents say there was
still not enough water to satisfy need.
This time, at least, the protest accomplished
something.
"In less than 24 hours the problem
was solved. As if by magic, bulldozers and
work crews appeared and by Thursday they
were filling in the holes," said a
local activist.
