Cuban co-op members haven't been paid in
two months
HAVANA, Cuba, December 6 (Reinaldo Cosano
Alén, Lux Info Press www.cubanet.org)
- The 34 members of the "17 de Mayo"
agricultural co-op in Banes, Holguín
province, haven't been paid for two months.
The co-op's administration claims it doesn't
have the money to pay them.
It turns out the co-op, whose main crop
is bananas, owes money to the banks and
cannot obtain a further line of credit.
The co-op works some of the best lands in
the fertile area, but has shown low production
figures in the last two years, on account
of unfavorable weather and poor management,
and because the government doesn't allow
them to engage in commercial operations,
according to Guillermo Llanos.
Some of the co-op members said before the
coop was formed they were independent producers.
Then they were induced to hand over their
land and join the co-op.
"They promised us horses to go about
and to work the land," said one who
asked not to be named. "They also promised
they were going to build us comfortable
housing, and nothing happened."
