Police evict peddlers from journalist's
front porch
HAVANA, Cuba, November 29 (José
Antonio Fornaris, Cuba Verdad / www.cubanet.org)
- Police chased away a couple who were trying
to sell their meager wares from the front
porch of independent journalist Amarilis
Cortina's home in Havana, despite that other
porches in the neighborhood are used in
the same way.
Mónica Fernández, a university
student, and her boyfriend, Oscar Padilla,
said that Wednesday, at a time when Cortina
was not home, a police sector chief came
by and told them that they could not continue
selling from that particular house.
Fernández said they were surprised,
because there are people selling stuff from
other porches in the vicinity, and none
of them have been bothered.
She added that the policeman said he was
carrying out orders from higher-ups, and
that their presence and that of their customers
obstructed their surveillance of the house.
About the incident, Cortina said that "what
happened is further proof of the harassment
and repression against those who think differently
from those in power in Cuba."
