Cuban fisherman dies for lack of an ambulance
PINAR DEL RIO, Cuba, November 29 (Rafael
Ferro Salas, Abdala Press / www.cubanet.org)
- Pedro Díaz who suffered a myocardial
infarction while fishing off the coastal
community of La Coloma, died as a result
of delays because the local polyclinic did
not have an ambulance available.
"The doctor at the polyclinic did
not want the patient transported in anything
but an ambulance. There was none to be had,
and due to the delay, the man died,"
said Eliosbel Garriga. "A relative
who was visiting from abroad offered to
take Díaz in his rented car, but
the doctor would not accept the offer,"
said Garriga.
Díaz, 51, had been a fisherman for
over 20 years. He contributed five percent
of his earnings toward medical services
in the community.
