Havana residents marooned when stairway
collapses
HAVANA, Cuba, August 26 (Richard Roselló
/ www.cubanet.org) When the stairway at
556 Villegas collapsed August 23, at least
8 residents were marooned in the upper floors,
although no personal injuries were reported.
Fire department personnel used a ladder
truck to help the people out.
Residents reported the stairway collapsed
when a room in an upper floor collapsed.
They complained that they had repeatedly
reported the stairway needed repairs, but
housing authorities said they didn't have
the resources to do it. Now the stairway
will have to be rebuilt, residents say,
pointing out it will be more expensive.
In all, seven families lost access to their
homes and are temporarily in shelters. Municipal
housing authorities examined the damage
and said as soon as a new stairway is built,
the back of the building is reinforced and
one of the sides is torn down, the residents
can return home.
