Cuban political prisoner
Normando Hernández: whereabouts unknown
M.A.R.
POR CUBA.
August 2, 2004, Miami, Florida - Normando
Hernández González, Cuban
independent journalist and political prisoner
has already been confined 90 days to a punishment
cell, after being brutally beaten by state
security agents, for standing firm ("Plantado")
as a prisoner of conscience. Since the 12th
of May, Normando has not been seen by any
of his relatives.
This alarming situation was denounced
today by Normando's wife, Yarai Reyes, in
a telephone call from Cuba. She added the
following:
- That the regime's prison guards urged
common prisoners to beat Normando; and,
- That the last they heard from Normando
was in May through wives of political prisoners
visiting their husbands in prison. They
informed Yarai that they had seen Normando
in bed -- very distraught with glazed eyes.
- Others held with Normando are José
Daniel Ferrer García, Diosdado González
Marrero and Leonel Grave de Peralta, all
political prisoners in "Kilo 51/2"
prison in the Province of Pinar del Río.
All of them - as well as Normando - remain
in punishment cells, isolated, without required
medical attention.
We urgently appeal to the international
community, democratic governments, human
rights organizations, media and others to
call for the immediate communication of
Normando Hernández González,
José Daniel Ferrer García,
Diosdado González Marrero and Leonel
Grave de Peralta with their relatives.
We hold Dictator Fidel Castro's regime
accountable for their lives, and raise our
voices to demand the immediate and unconditional
liberation of all Cuban political prisoners.
