Cuban health authorities try to contain conjunctivitis outbreak

HAVANA, September 18 (www.cubanet.org) - Cuban health authorities have taken several measures in an attempt to contain an outbreak of conjunctivitis throughout the island, including some cases of the hemorrhagic variety.

Authorities have asked those suffering from the disease to stay off the streets or be fined.

In Guantánamo province, the students and teachers of the "José Maceo Grajales" vocational school have been confined to the school to stop the spread of the disease. The students' parents are reportedly unhappy, saying there are no resources in the school to treat the disease.

In the Havana municipality of El Cerro, about 50 of the total population of 250 children have been isolated within the "La edad de oro" home for disabled children.

Relatives of prisoners in the 1580 prison in San Miguel del Padrón, just outside of Havana, also expressed concern for the spread of the disease among the approximately 1,400 inmates at the facility, fearing the poor sanitary conditions in the prison.
